If you were to ask any Otaku about summer 2017 you’d probably drown in the praise of Made in Abyss, which ended up being one of the greatest seasons of anime in recent history. Due to Kinema Citrus’ Fantasy adventure stealing the show, summer 2017 had a few good Shounen fall by the wayside. My favorite of the bunch was Kakegurui. The show is a blend of Yu-gi-oh and No game mixed with a little Monogatari. At first the mix seemed crazy but by the end of the first episode it was clear that Mappa Studios struck gold with the formula. The core Kakegurui fanbase felt that the show never got the shine it deserved but Netflix plans to change that ASAP. Kakegurui will be available on the streaming platform starting February 1st. Check out the trailer and synopsis below!
“Hyakkaou Private Academy, an institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum for the children of prominent wealthy families across Japan, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead, it’s reading your opponent, the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling. At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami transfers to Hyakkaou Private Academy, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like.” Kakegurui Wiki
Oh yay, I’ll finally get to see it. Problem is I’ve read so many reviews I’m kind of convinced I’m not going to like it, but at least I’ll now get to make up my own mind.
